Youth Above Violence

Dedicated to improving the lives of youth in our community by teaching healthy beliefs and behaviors and setting them up for positive social norms regarding relationship violence while striving for a violence free Pagosa. Rise Above Violence is a non-profit organization dedicated to ending the cycle of violence.

Warning signs of an unhealthy or abusive relationship
• Isolation from family and friends
• Explosive temper
• Constant belittling or put-downs
• Extreme jealously or insecurity
• Making false accusations 
• Repeatedly pressuring someone to have sex
• Constant mood swings towards you
• Possessiveness
• Checking cell phones or social networks without permission
• Physically inflicting pain or hurt in any way
• Telling someone what they can and cannot do

It is the policy and commitment of Rise Above Violence to not discriminate on the basis of race, age, color, sex, national origin, physical or mental disability, spiritual beliefs, sexual orientation, marital status, or income level.

Available Programs

YOUTH RISE
9-12th grades; a youth activism elective that focuses on building healthy, responsible students. Provides them with leadership skills, training and knowledge to stand up against violence in their school as well as community service work.

GIRLS ON THE RUN
3-7th grades; learn about friendships, being a good listener, being positive, healthy life-style choices, relationships, and leadership while training to run a 5k.

HIGH SCHOOL LUNCH GROUPS
9-12th grades; separated by gender, we have open discussion lunch groups as well as lunch groups focusing on relationship behaviors and crating student leaders that will help encourage healthy beliefs and behaviors.

MENTORING PROGRAM
High School students join Middle School students to model respect and inclusion through games and conversation.

6-8TH GRADE GIRLS GROUP
Subjects that teenage girls deal with daily such as bullying, friendships, drama, healthy life-style choices, boys, relationships, self-esteem, social cruelty and more.

HEALTH CLASSES AND PRESENTATIONS
Students in 5-12th grades receive a variety of presentations throughout the year on topics such as bullying, healthy relationships, internet safety, senior workshop, sexual harassment and group think, as well as information tables and campaigns throughout the year.

APRIL
​Sexual Assault Awareness Month: Information tables and activities to increase awareness. Youth Rise Students lead a Can I Kiss You Campaign.


FEBRUARY
Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month: Activities at the middle school and high school to raise awareness regarding teen dating violence.

Mental Health Awareness Walk  -- May 17, 2025

This annual awareness walk is hosted and organized by Youth Rise - a group of high school students that are part of Rise's youth programs. Join them and community members as they shine light on mental health issues and provide information and available resources regarding mental health.
