Domestic violence is not just a personal issue. It’s a community issue. When we stand united, we have the power to create lasting change here in Pagosa Springs. But, how can you help? It starts with recognizing that even small actions make a difference. One way to help is by learning how to truly support domestic violence survivors. While it may be natural to want them to take immediate steps to leave an abusive situation, it’s crucial to trust that survivors know their circumstances and safety better than anyone else. Leaving an abuser is often a complex and dangerous process, and survivors are experts on their own experiences. Pushing someone to take steps they aren’t ready for or trying to make decisions for them can be harmful and counterproductive. Instead, we must offer nonjudgmental support, listen to what they need and empower them to make decisions at their own pace. Supporting survivors means believing them, standing with them and respecting their choices, even if those choices don’t align with what we might think is best. Ultimately, the goal is to help survivors feel in control of their own lives and safety, rather than imposing our own expectations. When we stand with survivors and offer understanding and respect, we become part of the solution in creating a safer, stronger Pagosa for everyone.
