October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), and it is an important time for us to come together as a community to acknowledge the devastating effects of domestic violence and commit to ending the cycle of abuse. Domestic violence affects people of all genders, ages, races and backgrounds in our community. This month, we hope to raise awareness and break the silence surrounding this pervasive issue. By shining a light on domestic violence, we give survivors the space to tell their stories and let them know they are not alone. Whether you’re a survivor, a friend or a family member, your voice matters. Each of us plays a role in stopping the cycle of abuse. We will be sharing information and resources on our social media all month, and we encourage you to follow along, connect with us about volunteering as a victim advocate or reach out if you need support. We also invite you to join us for a special screening of “It Ends with Us” based on the bestselling novel by Colleen Hoover on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. at the Liberty Theatre. There will be a panel discussion about domestic violence featuring local professionals following the movie. Tickets are on sale at www.riseaboveviolence.org. When we work together, we can build a safer, more supportive community for survivors. It’s not just the survivor, alone and isolated, against domestic violence. It’s all of us — together against domestic violence.
