Recognizing the signs of domestic abuse: what you need to know

By Amanda Briggs/Rise Above Violence

Domestic violence is more than just physical harm. It can take many forms, and recognizing the signs is crucial to helping those in need.
Abuse can be emotional, psychological, financial or sexual, and, often, survivors may not even realize they are being abused.
One way to build a safer community is for all members to learn how to recognize the signs of domestic violence.
  • Emotional abuse includes manipulation, constant criticism or isolation from friends and family. This can also look like controlling behavior, where the abuser dictates how the survivor should live, who they can see and what they can do.
  • Financial abuse is common and involves controlling a person’s finances, preventing them from working or taking away their financial independence.
  • Physical abuse, which is often the most visible form, includes any kind of physical harm, from hitting and pushing to more severe violence.
  • Sexual abuse involves forcing or coercing someone into unwanted sexual acts.

By recognizing these signs, we can offer support, provide resources, and help survivors escape the cycle of violence.
Remember, if you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, Rise Above Violence is here to help. Our hotline is available 24/7 at (970) 264-9075.
